Building Connections Across Genetics and Bioinformatics:
ABI at SASBi–SAGS BIO2026
The SASBi–SAGS 2026 conferences brought together students, researchers and professionals working across genetics, genomics and bioinformatics, creating a space for scientific exchange and new connections.
For the African Bioinformatics Institute (ABI), the events were also an opportunity to connect with members of the growing community around our work. At the ABI stand, travel fellowship recipients, ABI researchers and colleagues from across the field stopped by between sessions to catch up, share their work and make new connections.
These informal interactions are an important part of building a stronger African bioinformatics community. A conversation between sessions, an introduction to a new colleague or a discussion about someone’s research can be the starting point for a future collaboration.
ABI was pleased to support and participate in the SASBi–SAGS 2026 programme and to connect with so many researchers and students working to advance genetics and bioinformatics in Africa.
We thank the South African Genetics Society and SASBi Student Council, together with the organisers of the SASBi–SAGS BIO2026 Student Symposium, for creating a space that brought the community together.
For ABI, being part of events like these is about more than having a presence at a conference. It is about strengthening the networks, relationships and opportunities that help African scientists learn from one another and shape the future of the field together.
